A Poem by Bijal Shah

Forced into relations, superficial niceties prevail.

Do we carry on or do we voice our dislike?

— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —

You care about class, status and perception.

I care about humanity, empathy and community.

— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —

You feel comfortable voicing your truth.

I bite my lip and consider your feelings.

— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — -

My first reaction is diplomacy.

Yours is to speak your mind.

— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — -

How different we are.

Only uniting in our ambivalence for each other.

— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — -

I slowly detach myself knowing my goal.

Your words and actions no longer have an effect.

— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — -

I just want to make it work.

For the sake of family.
